Today Bush visited Liberia, the fifth and last country on his itinerary's list in Africa, after Benin, Tanzania, Rwanda and Ghana. Because roads were blocked and ordinary people were not allowed to circulate with cars, we did not go to the office.
Amidst people aligned including school children, I watched the convoy passing by the main road and my view captured the face of the Liberia President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, but my eyes did not see George W. Bush. Perhaps by visioning the video on my camera I will be able to grasp a sign of his passing.
For the occasion, flags of the United States of America and Liberia - which are similar; the only difference is that the Liberia one has one star instead of 50 stars - were hoisted along the main streets.
Although most people in Liberia were excited by the US President’s coming and placarded messages of greetings and thanks, some made jokes about him and his name (‘bushman’). It was kind of astonishing to see so many efforts deployed to welcome the ‘world president’ as some call him. Myself I played by naming him the ‘war president’.
